Quotes

The Doctor: [spies a Cybermen head] "Oh, look at you!"
Rose Tyler: "What is it?"
The Doctor: "An old friend of mine, well… enemy. The stuff of nightmares, reduced to an exhibit. I’m getting old."

The Doctor: "I’m here to help, I’m called The Doctor"
Dalek: "Doctor?"
The Doctor: "…Impossible!"
Dalek: "THE Doctor?"
Dalek: "EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!"

Simmons: "What you gonna do? Sucker me to death?"

Dalek: "I demand orders!"
Doctor: "They’re never gonna come! Your race is dead! You all burned, all of you — ten million ships on fire, the entire Dalek race, wiped out, in one second. "
Dalek: "You lie!"
Doctor: "I watched it happen. I made it happen."
Dalek: "You destroyed us? "
Doctor: "I had no choice."

Dalek: "And what of the Time Lords?"
Doctor: "…Dead. They burned with you. The end of the last great Time War. Everyone lost."

Dalek: "We are the same."
Doctor: "We’re not the same! I’m not — no, wait. Maybe we are. You’re right, yeah, okay. ‘Cause I know what to do. I know what should happen. I know what you deserve… Exterminate!"

Doctor: "The Daleks have failed! Why don’t you finish the job, and make the Daleks extinct. Rid the universe of your filth. WHY DON’T YOU JUST DIE!"
Dalek: "You would make a good Dalek."

Doctor: "Broken. Broken. Hairdryer."

Notes

This episode takes place in the year 2012.

Return of the classic series villains, The Daleks, although only one Dalek is actually in the whole episode.

The Daleks had to be written out of the show when

negotiations

with the [Terry] Nation estate (who joint own the rights to the Daleks) broke down. Fortunately it was later resolved and the Daleks were rewritten back in.

Rob Shearman based the story on his Big Finish audio play, ‘Jubilee’.

The BBC launched a third mock website to coincide with this episode, www.geocomtex.net, which is Van Statten’s company.

The Doctor details the ‘Time War’ between the Timelords and the Daleks. The resulting war left only two apparent survivors of each race, The Doctor and a lone Dalek. In ‘Parting of the Ways’ it’s revealed that the Emperor Dalek also survived.

The Doctor spys a Cybermen head in van Statten’s museum. The Cybermen return in series two.

Van Statten’s personal helicopter is called "Bad Wolf One".

A Slitheen arm is seen in van Statten’s museum.

The Doctor junks a alien weapon calling it a hairdryer. A nod to the shoddy props employed in the classic series.

This episode is rated certificate ’12’ on the R2 DVD due to the torturing of the Dalek.

Adam joins the TARDIS crew as a short lived companion.

Nicholas Briggs voices the Dalek. He also voiced the Nestene in Rose.

The Daleks are apparently destroyed by the end of this episode. Of course they return again in the series finale.
