Actors David Bradley and Rupert Graves are to guest star in Series 7 of Doctor Who.

Veteran actor David Bradley is probably best known for his more recent role as school caretaker Argus Filch in the Harry Potter movies (yes, another one from Hogwarts!) He also appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones last year.

This isn’t actually Bradley’s first outing in the Whoniverse though; he was the voice of the vulture-like Shansheeth in The Sarah Jane Adventures story Death of the Doctor.

Rupert Graves meanwhile, will be recognisable to many readers as Detective Inspector Lestrade in Steven Moffat’s other show Sherlock.

The pair join Mark Williams, who was caught on set when filming began on Monday.

Today, filming begun on Series 7 of Doctor Who and already some details are coming in.

Shooting has been taking place inside a house on Church Road in Penarth (Amy and Rory’s street) with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill both on location. Eagle onlookers have already caught pics of the pair, which can be seen below.

Actor and comedian and Mark Williams (pictured, right) has also been spotted on the set. Williams is probably best known as Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter movies and for several roles in comedy The Fast Show. He has also recently done a stint on Being Human as vampire Regus.

There is some speculation that Williams could be playing Rory’s dad.

A few pics of Arthur Darvill, Karen Gillan follow.

The first piece of casting for Doctor Who Series 7 has been revealed and with it comes more exciting news – it appears that some filming is going to take place in Spain.

According to his agency news page, Rob Cavazos has been cast as Walter. No further details on the character are revealed.

However a note under the actor states: “Rob Cavazos shortly flies to Spain to play Walter in the new series of ‘DOCTOR WHO’ (BBC).”

So not Down Under as was rumoured then, unless that’s later.

Thanks to Ruther for the find.

Karen Gillan wants Amy’s exit from Doctor Who to really be the end for the character and doesn’t plan to make further appearances down the line.

Gillan told IGN: “I really, really want to have a final exit and then be able to look back on that as a final exit. I don’t know… I just don’t want to take away from that exit by making cameos in the future. I’d quite like it to be final and for people just to remember it fondly.”

In other words, she doesn’t want to become like Rose.

Gillan is still not allowed to say exactly how many episodes of Series 7 she’ll appear in, but thinks her exit will be “the best ever”.

She feels that Amy should go out on a high “when the character was at her prime”.

Gillan also gave her thoughts on how she’d like to leave: “I want to see her go with everything that she wants, because initially, when we met her, she was just seeking what she wants, you know what I mean? And she was kind of in this lost, transitional period, where she didn’t have a stable life. So I just want to see her get what she wants.”

Which doesn’t really fit in with Moffat’s plans for a heartbreaking end…

When Captain Jack was first introduced back in The Empty Child two-parter, it was revealed that the character had had two years of his memories erased.

To this day, this has never been addressed in either Doctor Who or Torchwood. However, Steven Moffat gave an update in Doctor Who Magazine when asked if he ever intended to follow up.

Moffat explained: “I don’t know. Ask Russell. No, ask me. No, ask Russell. Fact is, I wrote it in on a whim, in The Doctor Dances, just because it fitted the scene, and give Jack bit of mystery. Russell liked it, but worried we’d that be stuck with it. I offered to take it out, and he said yes. And then, no. And then, yes, hang on, no, maybe oh why are you doing this to me, Steven, I’m busy!

“And then Russell left, and I took over, and I figured it would probably be my problem. And then Torchwood came back and I figured it would be Russell’s. So ask Russell. No, ask me…

However Moffat promised resolution with an explanation in the future: “Look, we’ll figure out something some day, I promise…”

Perhaps if Jack returns in Series 7 or the 50th anniversary?

Let’s take a closer look at the characters that may return in Doctor Who Series 7.

River Song

No surprises to begin with. River being the most obvious candidate for another appearance. Steven Moffat loves writing the character and there are still a number of moments in her timeline that we haven’t seen yet. Her return was teased at the Christmas special press screening and Alex Kingston recently hinted at filming.

As Doctor Who gears up for filming on Series 7, there’s been a couple more updates.

The official website has now confirmed the first director this year and he’s new to the show:

The first director to shout ‘action’ will be the award-winning Saul Metzstein whose previous credits include Micro Men, the critically acclaimed Late Night Shopping and BBC Wales’ Upstairs Downstairs. For the very first time, Doctor Who will be produced at the new BBC Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, which officially open in March.

Meanwhile, there’s been some more trademark teasing from Steven Moffat in an interview with the The University Observer:

“We just had our official day commencing pre-production on Doctor Who, so as for knowing when it’s actually going to be shown is a little bit optimistic. But we’ll definitely show it, and I’m pretty sure it will be the autumn.”

On Amy and Rory’s final scenes:

“I’m writing that right now, the big Rory and Amy heartbreaking finale. It will be quite heartbreaking. I think you’ll be in trouble watching it.”

Thanks to Mark.

Issue #444 of Doctor Who Magazine confirms another couple of writers for Series 7.

First up is Toby Whithouse. Whithouse has written three episodes since the show returned:  School Reunion back in 2006, The Vampires of Venice in 2010 and last year’s The God Complex. His latest episode is described as a “big blockbuster of a genre piece”.

Whithouse told SFX that his story is currently planned as third episode and suggested it would be “one of the final ones” to feature Amy and Rory.

The other writer is Chris Chibnall, another returnee. He previously penned 42 in 2007 and The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood two-parter from 2010. Apparently his new episode contains the biggest set Doctor Who has ever had.

The mag also states that filming on the new series begins Monday 20th February, as previously reported.

Ever since it was announced that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were leaving Doctor Who, speculation on the next companion has naturally been rife.

Now former Harry Potter star Emma Watson has found herself in the frame thanks to a poll held by IGN. More than a quarter of the 5000 people questioned picked Watson as their ideal replacement.

IGN’s Chris Tilly said: “Emma is the overwhelming favourite with viewers – as Hermione Granger she empowered super-smart girls all over the world and she also showed impressive action credentials in the later Harry Potter movies.

“Fans really want to see her make the switch from magic to time travel. With Karen Gillan leaving, this will be one of the most hotly-contested roles in TV.”

IGN’s Top 5:

  1. Emma Watson
  2. Zooey Deschanel
  3. Anna Friel
  4. Pixie Lott
  5. Emilia Clark

Other suggestions included: Kimberly Nixon, Antonia Thomas, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Zawe Ashton, Dakota Blue Richards, John Boyega, Craig Roberts, Shona McGarty, Lenora Critchlow and Vicki McClure.
