Could Gallifrey Be in Omega’s Dimension?
Guest contributor Nikita Tetenko offers a theory on Gallifrey and its eventual return.
With Gallifrey seemingly poised to return to the show in the not too distant future, it is no longer a question of when, but how? Of course, there’s multiple ways for the genius brain of Steven Moffat to do this and I will now speculate on one possible solution.
What do I propose? Gallifrey is trapped in Omega’s anti-matter universe. Now, before anyone starts yelling at me, just hear me out. It would play out like this; Omega, a founder of Time Lord society and thus one of the most powerful Time Lords in history, foresaw Gallifrey’s rescue in the Time War, so he set out to play the long game.
During one of his many encounters with the Doctor, he reprogrammed his sonic screwdriver (which would be very easy for him since he, most likely, invented the thing), so when it completed the calculations to sent Gallifrey to a pocket universe, it would not be any random universe but in fact Omega’s. When the plan succeeded, Omega’s revenge was complete. The Time Lords, who he despised, were in the palm of his hand. Except, the one that truly mattered was not there. The survivor of the Last Great Time War himself, the Doctor.
Omega was of course not able to leave his universe for risk of fading away. The Master took his chance, trying to prolong his life and get back at his old enemy, he bartered with Omega to retrieve the Doctor. Omega was convinced, gifting him, now her, a new body and regeneration cycle to seek out the Doctor. He also gave her a Matrix data slice filled with Time Lord knowledge, for assistance. The last and perhaps most important piece of information given concerned Clara Oswald, the Impossible Girl. Omega also foresaw her with his mastery of time travel. It was crucial that the Doctor and Clara meet if Gallifrey was to be saved and Omega would reign supreme.
Missy began her work, uniting Clara and the Doctor together. Even though she was crazy, she still viewed Gallifrey as her home, having defended it in the Time War, albeit shortly. She had to create something to fight against Omega. It had to be of immense power and done quickly, since Omega would take notice the longer Missy had not returned. In her own very flawed way she began gathering people all across time and space, moments before their deaths, to be uploaded into the Matrix slice which she reprogrammed. With their experience and knowledge and the Cyberman’s body, she would create the greatest army the universe had ever seen.
However, she got carried away, expanding her goals from saving Gallifrey to conquering the universe (the Master is the Master, no matter how hard she tries to be nice). Because of her insanity, instead of giving the Doctor a straight answer, she played around with him, only letting slip that Gallifrey had in fact survived. When her army was destroyed, Missy had no way of making the Doctor believe her anymore so she had to discourage him from searching for Gallifrey by giving him false coordinates.
Series 9 is where it is possible for this to all come together. Missy, already confirmed by Michelle Gomez for a return, meets the Doctor once more where she finally explains everything to him. The cliffhanger that Moffat teased leading into the penultimate episode is Gallifrey’s discovery. The Doctor, Clara and Missy come together as uncertain allies to go head to head with the creator of the Time Lords, Omega.
Of course, anything could be expected from the great deceiver, Steven Moffat. It will be mad, frightening and terribly clever. We only have to wait and see…
