Series 9 Trailer 2 Breakdown
It’s time for Doctor Who TV to take an in-depth look at the second trailer for Doctor Who Series 9. This one covers new scenes only, any we’ve missed out were already covered in the first breakdown which you can see by clicking here.
Note: As always the following will be based on casting, filming, rumours, previews and plain old speculation. Proceed at your own discretion!
The Doctor: “Sorry I’m late.”
It’s ok, we’re very used to waiting Doctor.
So we open with a few shots of Capaldi in the TARDIS. Nothing too out of the ordinary here apart from the new roundels, and Capaldi’s red jacket which we’d previously glimpsed from filming of episode 10.
“He hasn’t got a plan yet…”
“…He will have and it’ll be spectacular.”
Clara tells Maisie Williams’ character. Given that she seems on friendly terms with Clara here, it seems safe to assume Williams is not playing a ‘baddie’ as some speculated based on her appearance in the first trailer as a masked highwaywoman.
Along with the previous shot, these next four are also all from episode 5/6 – The Girl Who Died / The Woman Who Lived.
We’ve seen these metal monsters already, but not quite the extent of their deadly weaponry.
This looks like it takes place not long after the Doctor and Clara’s first hugathon, as seen in the first trailer. Perhaps after being reunited.
The question is why do these monsters have this medieval village under siege? What value might it hold?
A couple of shots that are harder to place but Capaldi’s red jacket suggests it could be episode 10.
We also know from filming reports episode 10 features “glitches in reality” so this could be the Doctor trapped in one of said glitches.
Dodgy CGI aside, this ‘dragon’ like creature looks to be from the fifth/sixth episode based on the Viking haul in the background.
The Freaky Eye Agenda™ is taken to new extremes. Somebody call Guillermo del Toro!
This is a follow on scene from the first trailer with the hands rising up from the dirt. Mutations in Skaro perhaps?
Guest star Joivan Wade, reprising his role as Rigsy from last year’s Flatline. He’s just heard about there not being a full series next year.
Zygons, obviously. From Peter Harness’ two-parter (episodes 7 & 8). As are the next two shots where…
…Clara does her best Ace impersonation by arming an anti-air launcher!
Familiar scenes for spoilerholics as we saw these from filming. Clara is thought to working with UNIT and taking down a Zygon ship.
Return of the Cheetah People! …Or not.
Whatever it is doesn’t seem hostile here. Perhaps a cohort of Maisie Williams?
We see a couple of slightly different shots of the Dalek city from the opener with the Daleks now flying around it.
Perhaps if the Mirror rumour is true, the Daleks are going to be wiped from time…
Another shot that is hard to place, but the background scenery looks medieval. Perhaps some sort of teleportation machine?
A cool visual effect as this monster summons (or stupidly embraces) a tidal wave.
This looks like the back of the tall creature we see the Doctor confronting later in the trailer. It could add up about it being Fisher King (played by Neil Fingleton) that was rumoured for episodes 3 & 4.
Clara confronts who else but…
Missy. “Hello!”
She clearly isn’t intimidated by little Miss Oswald.
