Series 11 “Rosa” – Teasers Explained
Clint Hassell reveals the answers to last week’s hints and teasers for Series 11, episode 3 “Rosa.”
- 1. Apparently, the Doctor doesn’t yet consider Yasmin, Ryan, and Graham to be her “companions” as, despite the call to adventure inherent in the Doctor’s words at the end of “The Ghost Monument,” “Rosa” begins with the Doctor merely trying to return the three to Sheffield.
This means that, rather than meeting Shakespeare, visiting exotic Ahkaten, or seeing the end of the world, the trio’s first trip inside the TARDIS involves “riding the bus in Montgomery.” - 2. Despite picking up almost immediately after “The Ghost Monument,” everyone has apparently had time to visit the TARDIS wardrobe, including the Doctor, who sports a new shirt.
The Doctor’s new shirt is still rainbow-striped, but is burgundy, instead of black. - 3. Did . . . did they just make a joke about the female Doctor not being able to drive the TARDIS? Oh, that is not going to sit well with the Internet.
the Doctor: “This is our ninth attempt [to return to Sheffield] – -”
Graham: “Fourteenth! You can’t control this thing can you?”
the Doctor: “Excuse me! Yes, I can . . . most of the time.” - 4. Guess which King the Doctor leant a mobile phone to?
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll - 5. Artron energy!
Traces of artron energy from Krasko’s time displacement weapon are what initially draw the Doctor to 1955 Montgomery. Also, the TARDIS runs on artron energy. - 6. We finally get a rousing “Brilliant!” from the Doctor.
in response to meeting Rosa Parks - 7. The TARDIS and Rosa Parks have something in common.
Both have traces of artron energy – – Rosa because she is being stalked by Krasko, whose time displacement weapon is leaking artron energy. - 8. Perception filter!
Krasko uses a perception filter to hide a suitcase full of future tech. - 9. Who is “G. F. B.”?
“G. F. B.” are the initials stamped on the front of Krasko’s suitcase. Ostensibly, if the suitcase belonged to Krasko, “K” would be one of the initials. So, who is “G. F. B.”? - 10. Best exchange: “Can we **** it?” “. . . is the right question!”
in regards to Krasko’s suitcase:
Ryan: “Can we open it?”
the Doctor: “. . . is the right question!” - 11. “Nah, not that one. Second-hand. Huge mileage. One careless owner.”
-the Doctor, in response to Krasko’s claim that the TARDIS “could be worth a lot” - 12. ****** ***i*******!
Krasko uses a vortex manipulator, “cheap and nasty time travel” similarly used by Jack Harkness and River Song. - 13. Both the Doctor and Graham have aliases, and UK viewers will recognize them both!
The Doctor claims to be Banksy (an anonymous, English, street artist/political activist – – for those outside the UK), while Graham tells the Montgomery police officer that his name is “Steve Jobs.” - 14. Apparently, the Doctor and a companion are . . . married?
The Doctor and Graham pretend to be a couple, while being inspected by the Montgomery police officer, in their Sahara Springs Motel room. - 15. *t****a**!
Krasko is tattooed with a Stormcage identifier, having served time there for a “nasty” crime that resulted in at least 2,000 deaths. - 16. Jodie Whittaker almost gets the Colin Baker treatment.
In order to test whether Krasko did in fact have a violence-preventing neural implant, Thirteen goads the ex-convict into trying to choke her. The Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker, infamously choked companion Peri in The Twin Dillemma. - 17. Guess who else uses that mobile phone!
Elvis lent Frank Sinatra the Doctor’s mobile phone. - 18. Literally caused me to tear up: “No, no, I don’t want to be **** ** ****.”
Graham: “No, no, I don’t want to be a part of this.” - 19. “Rosa” distinctly shows what “The Ghost Monument” did not: the TARDIS’ time rotor, despite being a jagged crystal column, does move up and down during flight.
- 20. We can add two more U.S. Presidents to the list of those who have appeared in Doctor Who.
Presidents Clinton and Bush flank Rosa Parks in the documentary footage the Doctor shows Graham, Yasmin, and Ryan, in the final scene.
