David Tennant’s 14th Doctor Hates “Cryptic” New 60th Teaser Trailer
Last night saw the BBC rather sneakily (and unexpectedly) releasing a cryptic new teaser trailer for the 60th anniversary specials during its evening programming. If you missed it on broadcast like us, you can check it out below:
Of course, fans quickly noticed the trailer was reversed, and a flipped version helps to clear the dialogue up…
For those still struggling to hear it all, David Tennant’s 14th Doctor says, “Cryptic, I hate that!” and then we hear companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) asking “Why did this face come back?”
Clips briefly show the Doctor, Donna, a UNIT officer with glowing eyes, and perhaps most intriguingly a quick clip from the Series 4 finale “Journey’s End” showing the Doctor’s severed hand. As many will recall, a major plot point that explained how David Tennant’s Meta-Crisis Doctor came to be. Just a fun little nod and wink? Or something more?
Fans also noticed some hidden binary code in the trailer, which was also tweeted by the BBC themselves (and then deleted).
Twitter user @NotAgnor wrote: “Stitching the binary codes together outputs: 7!@THE#!!” ^@^@ STAR &% #(BEAST(*2 (or “THE STAR BEAST”).”
As DWTV reported back in June of last year, Doctor Who and the Star Beast was a comic published in Doctor Who Weekly. It featured the Wrarth Warriors, an intergalactic police force designed to battle a cute-looking alien race called the Meeps. Both these monsters will appear in the first special.
Some have speculated that the new vortex-like clip could actually be the Black Sun.
It’s the black sun from star beast! It’s what made the meeps evil! #doctorwho #drwho #whovian https://t.co/j7dojvGoi7 pic.twitter.com/stjmX8EVb7

This teaser could be leading up to a proper trailer coming soon (perhaps on the Coronation weekend), but on the flip side we’re still over half a year away from the 60th anniversary. Still isn’t it nice to see Doctor Who being playfully marketed again!
