Series 10 First Trailer Breakdown
It’s time for Doctor Who TV to take an in-depth look at the first trailer for Doctor Who Series 10.
Note: As always the following will be based on casting, filming, rumours, previews and plain old speculation. Spoilerphobes proceed at your own discretion!
We open appropriately with scenes from episode 1, “A Star In Her Eye,” and narration from our new companion, played by Pearl Mackie.
Bill: “I’m Bill. I serve chips.”
As earlier reports suggested, Bill works in the university cafeteria. The eagerly-awaited return of the Man With Chips is now looking a near certainty.
Bill: “He’s a professor, or a lecturer, or as I call him…
“Doctor What?”
Bill is not alone at the university, as we see the Doctor is masquerading there too as a professor. Bill addressing the Doctor as such would be an Ace callback.
Bill: “And now we go everywhere…”
It looks like the latter two scenes occur towards the end of episode 1, with the classic moment of the Doctor inviting his latest companion to join him on the journey of a lifetime.
Bill: “It’s like a…”
The Doctor: “Spaceship.”
Bill: “…Kitchen!”
The next batch of scenes mostly take place in the TARDIS. We see Bill’s reaction after entering, subverting the usual “bigger on the inside” moment.
Bill: “Any space…”
Bill: “Where are we?”
“Which way’s Earth?”
The first scene from Episode 2, written by popular “In The Forest of the Night” writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce. As we can see, the story takes place in a futuristic city surrounded by corn fields.
Bill: “What’s a Dalek?”
This next clip should be familiar to everyone, as it was shown earlier in 2016 as Bill’s introductory clip. This is from the obligatory Dalek episode. Here she encounters one for the first time.
Bill: “Can I use the toilet?”
The Doctor’s face says it all.
Bill: “…any time…”
Bill: “Get in!”
We then see a selection of clips from Episode 3, written by Sarah Dollard. Bill seems very impressed with this particular trip back into the past.
Bill is left blue in the face though when she encounters Peter Caulfield as Dahhren in Episode 5 by Jamie Mathieson.
We see another familiar moment from the Dalek episode.
Bill “…and now I see everything differently.”
Another clip from episode 2. Some sort of futuristic vault or storage area?
This could be a scene from episode 1 with Bill witnessing the water eruption (as seen later).
This ‘person’ is likely from Episode 4,”The Haunted Hub”, by Mike Bartlett. The episode is rumoured to feature giant woodlice living under the floorboards. Really.
A couple more scenes from episode 1. The screaming girl is Stephanie Hyam playing Bill’s unfortunate friend Heather. Here she has become victim to killer puddles. The last clip could be from episode 4 again.
The “Emoji Robots” are a foe in episode 2. Let’s hope they’re not ?.
This striking landscape appears to be our only clip from Episode 9, ‘The Eaters of Light”, written by classic series writer Rona Munro.
Poirot! Aka David Suchet aka ‘the Landlord’ in Episode 4.
Bill: Where are we?
The Doctor: Basically in the middle of a war. And it’s not as bad as it sounds!
All these scenes are from the Dalek episode again. Aside from the evil pepper pots about to exterminate Nardole (we can only hope), the costumes of the victims in the explosion add weight that we could see moments from the Dalek-Movellan conflict.
The Doctor: “I’m the Doctor. I will save all your lives and when I do, you will spend the rest of them wondering who I was.”
A couple more clips from Episode 5. The Doctor is about to do something heroic and stupid, no doubt.
An interesting selection of clips from Episode 3 (although the scene with the Doctor back in the Sonic sunglasses is debatable). The main threat is thought to be a serpent-like creature living in the depths of the River Thames that has frozen over. Someone, unwisely, decides to take a dive…
And, the Doctor also punches a bloke (Nicholas Burns). So there’s that.
This appears to be a scene from Episode 1, showing perhaps the source of the watery threat.
Eleven would be proud.
An explosion leads us to the title card promising: “See the universe anew”.
We follow immediately with a couple of clips from episode 5 showing Kieran Bew’s character asking:
“Are you out of your mind?”
The Doctor: “Yes, completely, but that’s not a recent thing.”
Quite. And so ends the first trailer. See you in the Spring!
