My Wishlist for Moffat’s Swan Song Series (Part 1)
Guest contributor Connor Hamilton begins his list.
Steven Moffat’s departure was for me very expected. As much as I love his work and him as a person, I feel it was a very just decision. Now Moffat has hinted he’ll be going out with a bang, and if Series 4 and the ‘Year of Specials’ is anything to compete with, Moffat has definitely got his work cut out for him. But I have faith he’ll succeed, and will sweep us all off our feet. However, quite personally I have a selection of 10 requests and hopes that I would like to see interpreted one way or another into Moffat’s swan song series, and I’m sure a few of them people will agree with me on…
10. The Return of Past Moffat Characters
To kick off the list I decided I would 100% back seeing a few Moffat characters make their return to our screens. This could range from the Paternoster Gang, to even Liz Ten etc. Personally, I’m not entirely fussed, because with the exception of Danny Pink, I have loved and would back the return of almost every single Moffat character we’ve met so far. If there was a way to interpret such an idea into the finale, I really hope Moffat takes the opportunity, (keep this thought in mind, I’ll be back to it later…)
9. Fill in the Plot Holes
Don’t shoot the messenger! This is just 100% the most irritating thing for me to hear fans moan about. ‘Plot holes’ left right and centre, which in my opinion often aren’t problems, or are so minor they can’t even be regarded as actual plot holes. However with a whole 14 episodes (including specials) coming our way I really hope that Moffat takes the opportunity to silence the ‘Plot Hole Brigade’ once and for all for his era, by fixing his ‘mistakes’, if they can even be branded as that, and leaving, knowing no crevice is unfilled without a good explanation or justification.
8. Don’t Backseat the Doctor
So we know we are getting a new companion for Series 10, which I’m equally excited and worried about, to be honest with you. The benefits are just the joy of the Doctor meeting somebody new, which after 3 years with Clara, many as a fandom are definitely thirsty for. However the negatives could be that Capaldi finds himself ‘back-seated’ for yet another approach to the companion as being someone who is more than meets the eye and takes all the focus. As well as this being Moffat’s final series, rumour has it this could be Capaldi’s too. If so, like Moffat, Capaldi deserves centre stage giving all he’s got before he can’t anymore. However, I would like said companion to make his/her way into Series 11 with Chibnall and potentially a new Doctor, because if this show learns anything from past mistakes, it’s that a sense of familiarity from one aspect of the show, for example the Doctor, Head Writer or companion, does the world of good, and makes the transition to a new era much easier for fans.
7. Make A Man Out of Missy
Okay, don’t take the heading for this one seriously! It was just a cheap attempt at making a Mulan pun. Moffat re-invented the Master/Missy and I personally want to see her return under the pen of Moffat once again. Whether this will be Missy’s swansong or not, I’m not overly fussed, but Moffat should at least get the opportunity to finish up with Missy. And if there’s no story for Moffat to finish, you can never see Gomez’s gorgeously evil face too many times anyway. So a return would be justified on those grounds equally as much.
6. Steal RTD’s Beautiful Farewell Idea
This point I told you to hold onto earlier. The return of companions/characters is always a good thing in my opinion when rounding up the end of an era. And nothing will ever give me goosebumps like The End of Time where the 10th Doctor has one last visit to all the characters who were very important to RTD’s era of Doctor Who. This is exactly the type of tribute Moffat’s era deserves, and I really hope they decide to mirror this sort of idea, putting a Moffat spin on it. Then we can say goodbye to Moffat’s era, like with RTD’s era, for (possibly) the last ever time. It’ll be an utter shame to see some of these characters go to waste if they don’t appear in Series 10 somewhere.
So that’s Part 1 of my wishlist done. However there are another 5 yet to come. In the meantime please let me know down in the comments what your wishlist for Series 10 contains, and if you agree or disagree with any of the points raised so far.
