Site Update: March 2016
For coming up to 11 years now, Doctor Who TV has served fans news, features and updates, all year round whether the show is on or off the air. The site has clocked upwards of 6,000 posts since 2009 alone and dedicated a huge amount of time to delivering this content. However, it has become evident of late some things are going to have to change.
There are a few reasons for this. As regular visitors may know, the site has suffered financially over the past year or so due to advertising changes, the increase in ad blockers and other factors out of our control. And despite some kind patron support in recent months, the situation is still far from comfortable.
The huge gap between the next series is another factor. While Doctor Who is no stranger to waits, Series 10’s abnormally lengthy delay is an issue. The simple fact is, for everything posted, the most popular content is always updates about Doctor Who’s upcoming episodes, and obviously the majority of this year will be scant, and visitors down as a result. We refuse to resort to the kind of tactics that the mainstream media use purely to draw ad clicks.
There are also some personal reasons. Running a site daily, all year round is a big, and can be, very demanding commitment with no let up. It has taken a huge amount of your editor’s time for the past decade-plus. Unfortunately other life responsibilities don’t always mesh with the hours required.
For all these reasons, the site will therefore now be running in a more limited capacity. Any major news will still be posted as a priority. Feature articles will be still be posted but a little more occasionally, and not necessarily every single day. Commenting will also be judged on a post-by-post basis, rather than automatically enabled. For example, articles that are likely to garner productive discussion will be open as before, but more minor updates and such might not. This may also depend on moderator availability, in some cases there may be shorter windows to comment.
This is not the end of DWTV, but a measure to allow it to run in some form for the immediate future, rather than not existing at all. Thanks for your support and understanding.
